Under the federal law entitled "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act," statistics regarding major crimes "reported" to campus security authorities must be published for the past three calendar years. A crime is "reported" when it is brought to the attention of a campus security authority or the local police. It is not necessary for the crime to have been investigated by the police or campus security, nor must a finding of guilt or responsibility be made. Information in this report was obtained from the files of the Office of Safety and Security, the Office of Student Affairs and the law enforcement agencies that surround our main campus & alternate sites. The reported crimes and relevant statistics follow:
When circumstances warrant, Crime Alert Notices are distributed to warn the College community of a crime or incident that poses a possible ongoing or continuous threat to campus safety. When the nature of the crime warrants public notification, crime bulletins are distributed via the campus e-mail system. In addition, notices may disseminated via the campus-wide phone system or placed on the College's web site.
Warnings may also be utilized to notify the College community regarding campus or off-campus crime trends or incidents in order to encourage the use of safety precautions.
Crime warnings are released as soon as reasonably possible once sufficient information is obtained.
Marist Security works in partnership with Student Affairs, the Public Affairs Office and the local Police Departments to provide timely notification of incidents impacting campus safety.
To report a crime or other incident on-campus, call the Office of Safety and Security at x2282 or from off-campus at 845-471-1822
Emergency #: x5555 or 845-575-5555

1 Grease fire in Dining Hall Kitchen
The College is inspected annually by Inspectors from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control. Upon completion of the inspection each Residence Facility is issued a Certificate of Compliance from the NYS OFP & C.
Every campus residence facility is equipped with a fire alarm system as required by NYS Fire codes. All systems are compliant with NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standards. Each building system is inspected by the Town of Poughkeepsie Building Department prior to the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy.
The system is monitored by a NY State licensed alarm monitoring contractor as well as by the College's Office of Safety and Security.
Upon the receipt of an alarm by the monitoring station and the Security Office, the Fire Department is immediately dispatched and Security Officers also respond. The Fire Department and Security Department portable radios are compatible, which allows for direct on-scene communication between the two departments.
The entire campus Fire Alarm System is serviced and inspected annually by a NY State licensed contactor and a certified report submitted to the College.
Sprinkler systems are installed in all residence facilities as required by the NYS building code when they are built and/or renovated. All residence facilities have Certificates of Occupancy from the Town of Poughkeepsie Building Department. Systems are "wet" systems and are installed to NFPA standards.
All Campus Sprinkler Systems are inspected quarterly by a private contractor as required by NYS Fire Code.
Fire Alarm and Sprinkler inspection reports are reviewed by the NYS Inspector during the annual state inspection.
New York State requires two (2) supervised Fire Drills to be conducted in every Residence Facility per semester. Campus Security Officers conduct the drills and monitor the evacuation of all residents.
In addition to Fire Drills, all resident students receive on an annual basis a brochure on Fire Safety information. Resident Directors and Resident Assistants receive an annual Fire Safety Training program provided by members of the Fairview Fire Department and the NY State Office of Fire Prevention and Control Fire Drills are also conducted in Academic/Administrative Buildings twice per semester. Fire Safety information is presented to faculty and staff members at employee orientation.
The Following excerpts are taken from the Marist College Student Code of Conduct and Resident Student Handbook. This book is provided to, and signed for by all resident students when they pick up their room key.
All buildings are equipped with fire alarm systems. For your safety, whenever the fire alarm sounds, evacuate the building immediately. Fire alarm pull stations are located near the exits. Treat all alarms as the real thing - assume nothing! Failure to evacuate an area may also result in disciplinary action.
If a fire emergency occurs, your actions can make the difference between a minor event and a disaster.
