Why come to Counseling Services?
Students come with a wide range of concerns such as adjusting to college life, making decisions, or working out problems in relationships. Others come with more serious problems, including persistent feelings of depression or anxiety, suicidal thoughts, serious interpersonal difficulties, feeling out of control with food, alcohol, or drugs, or coping with difficult experiences like family problems, the death of someone close, sexual violence, or abuse.
How long does the Counseling Process Take?
When a student calls to make an appointment, a triage appointment is scheduled within one week to determine the level of concern and how best to serve the student. A student may have their question or concern resolved within that triage or shortly after. For those who have had a concern for months or years, it may take a longer time to build a trusting relationship with a counselor and see progress. About 73% of students seen at Marist Counseling Services come for 1-5 sessions.
Marist College Counseling Services works from a short-term biweekly model, meaning that the time between a student and their counselor is focused on identifying goals, building coping skills, and starting the journey towards wellness.
Standing appointments are typically every other week.
Does the student always continue with the counselor who sees them first?
Not always. There are some concerns that are not appropriate for treatment at our center and it may be in the student's best interest to receive treatment elsewhere. At triage, the counselor will determine the next best steps for the student, including support for a referral to another therapist or specialist off-campus or closer to home. Occasionally, the counselor may refer a student to another member of the Counseling Staff as well.
What if I've missed my appointment?
To ensure that all students have an opportunity to be seen, Counseling Services cannot guarantee to hold an appointment time if a student frequently misses or cancels a standing appointment. Students who have missed their appointment without calling to cancel are encouraged to reschedule as soon as possible.
Are there crisis/walk-in services?
If a student is experiencing crisis or significant distress and there is not a risk of imminent danger, call us to schedule an appointment or come in and state that you are in crisis. The next available counselor will meet with you and determine need for immediate intervention. Every effort will be made to respond to a student's crisis situation as soon as possible.
Examples of student situations that require crisis/walk-in intervention services include:
- Students experiencing suicidal or self-harming thoughts or impulses
- Students experiencing homicidal thoughts or impulses
- Students who have experienced a sexual or physical assault
- Students who are hearing voices or misperceiving reality
- Students who are dealing with overwhelming loss, such as the death of a loved one
Options for students who are in distress and may not have a situation listed above:
- Call Counseling Services and schedule a triage
- Attend Let's Talk Services (Confidential, drop-in service Tuesdays and Wednesdays 3-4:30PM SC1207)
- Attend Stress Workshop (Thursdays 1-2PM SC 352)
If a student is at risk of imminent danger:
- Call 911
- Go to the nearest Emergency Room: Midhudson Regional Hospital 241 North Rd, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601

Can I come about someone else?
Yes, counselors will talk to students concerned about how to deal with friends. Of course, the counselor will not reveal any confidential information about any other clients.
Will what I say be kept confidential?
Any information given in counseling, as well as the fact that the student has been seen for counseling, is kept strictly confidential. Disclosure to any outside person requires written permission of the student. However, should the life or safety of the student or someone else be in imminent danger, the counselor may be obligated to notify appropriate persons.
Will coming to counseling go on my record?
No, absolutely not. Counseling records are not part of a student's official record.
