Applications to get an Academic Learning Center tutor are available in our office, LB 331. After completing the form, be sure to make an appointment with the Tutor Coordinator in order to receive the name and number of your tutor.
Both are a form of group tutoring covered by your tuition. A review session is an additional class period conducted by a trained peer tutor. Either the instructor or a group of 5 or more students, who have consulted with the instructor, can set up both. For an up-to-date listing of review sessions, check the schedule outside the Academic Learning Center, and in Donnelly. The list is also posted on the Academic Review Sessions webpage.
The tutee is responsible for paying the tutor $8.00 an hour for private tutoring. If you are a student affiliated with an on-campus service (HEOP, Athletics, Special Services) that service will be responsible for paying the tutor.
If you are working with a private tutor who you are paying directly, you do not have to keep that tutor for the entire semester if he/she is not needed. However, if you are a student affiliated with an on-campus service, you might want to check with that service as to the specific guidelines.
Generally, tutoring is available for most foundation and Core courses. Tutoring is also available for reading texts and writing papers in all content courses.
Generally, tutoring requests are filled two weeks prior to final exams each semester. Proofreading is available one week prior to exams. Check the List of Lasts online, or posted outside the Academic Learning Center.
The first stop for writing help would be during your instructor's office hours. The Academic Learning Center offers a free drop-in proofreading service. This service is available Monday thru Thursday, 11:30 to 1:30 and 7 to 9. We also offer a free on-line proofreading service called OPTO. In addition, check the Writing Center for additional free paper tutoring sessions.
